Overview

Proceeding flood events across 2022, Pioneer Park in Wellington suffered severe flood damage. Council sourced funding to identify the alignment of Pioneer shared pedestrian footpath including;

  • $650,000 | Severe Weather and Flood Fund, NSW Government
  • $295,000 | Dubbo Regional Council budgeted capital works for Pioneer Park Shared Pathway

The new internal path system will reconnect the Bell River pedestrian bridge to Showground Road. The new shared path will accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists – reinstating access to the Showground and Mt Arthur.

Stage 1 | Works have been completed with the upgrade of the eastern access road to allow 2-way vehicular movement down to the Pioneer Park amenity block.

Stage 2 | The placement of sandstone block around the southern and eastern side of the oval will help prevent any unauthorised vehicles onto the playing surface and provide additional spectator seating.

Stage 3 | The final stage includes;

  • The new pathway will be constructed from reinforced concrete with an edge beam on the upstream side to make it more resistant to future flood events.
  • The new path will be 2.5 metres wide to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists.
  • The design of the new path is well advanced and is being tied into the Bell River Stabilisation Project.
